Djokovic mengalami cedera saat pertandingan putaran keempat melawan Francisco Cerundolo pada hari Senin. Ia bermain dengan menahan rasa sakit, namun berhasil menang dalam lima set.
Setelah pertandingan, Djokovic berharap cedera lututnya tidak akan serius, tetapi pemindaian MRI pada hari Selasa mengungkapkan bahwa ia mengalami robek meniskus.
Ia terpaksa mengundurkan diri dari perempat finalnya melawan Casper Ruud dan membuat keputusan untuk menjalani operasi cedera pada hari Rabu di Paris.
“Beberapa hari terakhir, saya harus membuat beberapa keputusan sulit setelah mengalami robekan meniskus pada pertandingan terakhir saya,” kata Djokovic dalam sebuah pernyataan di akun Instagram miliknya.
“Saya masih mencerna semua ini, tetapi saya senang memberi tahu Anda bahwa operasinya berjalan lancar.
“Saya sangat menghargai tim dokter yang telah mendampingi saya, serta dukungan luar biasa yang saya terima dari para penggemar.
‘Saya akan berusaha sebaik mungkin agar tetap sehat dan bugar untuk kembali ke lapangan sesegera mungkin. Kecintaan saya pada olahraga ini kuat dan keinginan untuk bersaing di level tertinggi adalah yang membuat saya terus maju.”
Itu adalah operasi kedua yang dilakukan Djokovic selama kariernya. Operasi lain di siku kanannya membuatnya absen di AS Terbuka 2017. Namun, tampaknya semakin besar kemungkinan juara Grand Slam 24 kali itu akan absen di Wimbledon tahun ini.

Djokovic juga sangat ingin bersaing di Olimpiade Paris dan memenangkan medali emas di tunggal putra, salah satu dari sedikit penghargaan yang masih belum diraihnya.
“Ini semua tentang membangun permainan saya untuk lapangan tanah liat,” kata Djokovic pada bulan April.
“Saya ingin mencapai puncak saya di Paris. Di sanalah saya ingin memainkan tenis terbaik saya. Segala hal lain adalah bonus, jadi mari kita lihat apa yang terjadi.”
Jika Djokovic benar-benar absen di Wimbledon, ini akan menjadi pertama kalinya sejak 1998 turnamen besar itu dimainkan tanpa Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, atau Roger Federer. Federer pensiun pada 2022, sementara Nadal juga memprioritaskan Paris 2024.
Nadal mengatakan setelah kekalahannya di putaran pertama dari Alexander Zverev di Prancis Terbuka tahun ini, akan sulit untuk beralih ke lapangan rumput dan kemudian kembali ke lapangan tanah liat untuk Olimpiade.
